While he says some good stuff, his voice just puts me asleep.

This might label me pretentious/a snob, but I love how this guy writes. Also this:

@Ethan Carter review: Bloated, bloomy, lazy writing of the worst kind. This guy can't leave out a single note. Meh. I did like some of his videos, this one is quite bad, though. It's the kind of unnecessary thesaurus-writing Mark Twain used to make fun of (I didn't find the funny ones just now, here are the serious ones on this) :

“I notice that you use plain, simple language, short words and brief sentences. That is the way to write English – it is the modern way and the best way. Stick to it; don’t let fluff and flowers and verbosity creep in. When you catch an adjective, kill it. No, I don’t mean utterly, but kill most of them – then the rest will be valuable. They weaken when they are close together. [very important point imo] They give strength when they are wide apart. An adjective habit, or a wordy, diffuse, flowery habit, once fastened upon a person, is as hard to get rid of as any other vice.”

There's that very famous quote:
“I didn’t have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.”

“Writing is easy. All you have to do is cross out the wrong words.”

And now an Allosaurus sentence for a little perspective: "The greenery in Ethan Carter is particularly laudable: Its swaying, breathing, deciduous masses of foliage blanketing the entire valley in an almost overpowering early autumn pallet."

That's all I have to say about Allosaurus' writing in that review.

The game itself is okay, but nothing more. It's basically Gone Home (walk around and interact with highlighted objects) mechanically, only with a very generic,
Spoiler:
seemingly Damian-ish storyline that can't be saved with the "twist" at the very end. Exploration is non existent, really, because the game either tells you where the stuff is with the floating words mechanic or by highlighting them from afar. The important set pieces/buildings are quite obvious. There's also hardly any additional story to find when exploring objects other than the ones you're supposed to explore in order to complete the game. So yeah, it's not the exploration game they sold, imho. A let-down =/

What's quite fun is that
Spoiler:
there is a moment in one of the gameplay trailers (showing the very first murder case) where the player in the trailer looks to the left after crossing the bridge at which point the developer says "We could go there, [additional Open World jibber jabber], but we'd rather investigate the railroad tracks some more". Turns out, there's nothing there on the left. After about 10m, there's a pile of rocks blocking everything and you have to go back. And that's exactly the point I was making before: The open world is not really necessary (and quite small, actually), there is practically nothing to the world other than the stuff you're supposed to find for the story.

Keep it simple, stupid is the ultimate quote on the matter. I remember Edge magazine had a very verbose way of writing too. A lot of the time I could barely even tell the quality of the game based on their reviews, without looking at the score. The writing was so self indulgent at times that it barely described anything about what was being reviewed, or discussed.

Also, while I do like Al's voice, it just feels like a lullaby at times.

I don't really mind verbosity as long as it's well done, and Al's job in the video is better than most. It also strikes me as appropriate rather than excessive, as pretty much the entire video is about the atmosphere and aesthetics of the game so why shouldn't the diction he uses try and reflect those qualities?

It's certainly plausible that the depth of his analysis doesn't match up with the purpleness of his prose, however, as brought up by this series of Youtube comments (these are actually rational, I swear).

This is a great video.

I'm glad Al prefers TWAU as well.

He's right about the lack of puzzles and inventory management though.
