It's not a big thing.

Looking at AMD's CPUs, it seems as though they're targeting a different market. Intel's are better, but AMD's might go for around $300 less. I'm not sure that AMD tries to compete in performance aside from, maybe, their high-end CPUs.

I understand that Intel wasn't always the best. Apparently, AMD released the first dual-core CPU. Intel only sort of had them.

It seems to have mostly been aimed at getting Microsoft to act again with DirectX. In this sense it appears to have worked.

AMD was king for a bit, yes. Intel got lax and behind. It didn't last long; AMD squandered the money.

You're talking about Mantle? I think the idea is good in concept, but in application I'm worried about there being too many APIs in the market.

http://support.amd.com/en-us/search/faq/190

"Why not use OpenGL extensions instead of a new API?

The design of Mantle was driven by feedback from leading game developers, who preferred the idea of a fresh start with a new API to the extension and patching of existing ones. However, we believe that many of Mantle’s concepts are applicable to other graphics APIs, and will inspire their future development."

This is presumably a response to Carmack's assertion, and it's a weak argument to me. If existing languages can offer similar performance to Mantle, I think that we should be using them.

"Does Mantle compete with DirectX®?

DirectX® provides a standardized programming interface for GPUs, allowing the same code to work across a wide range of architectures and product configurations. Mantle complements DirectX® by providing a lower level of hardware abstraction for developers who want and need it, echoing the capabilities they have come to expect on dedicated game consoles."

It seems to run in parallel with DirectX rather than sitting on top of it.

"How much additional performance will Mantle provide?

Performance benefits will vary depending on the characteristics of each application, and of the CPU & GPU it is run on. In general, the largest benefits will be seen in cases where CPU overhead has traditionally limited GPU throughput."

I don't look at this as a big limitation. Wouldn't future advances in Unified Virtual Memory and discrete graphics cards with their own CPUs and RAM help alleviate this problem without the need for an API?

Read some of the DirectX 12 stuff. That seems to finish off Mantle.

Also here's to hoping people adopt OpenGL.

I'll make sure that I do that. Another thing I want to throw out there is that there will be no support for consoles initially with Mantle. Sounds like throwing a wrench into the works after finally getting consoles with similar architectures to PCs.

I'm not sure that it will be supported over DirectX in the long run, especially since NVIDIA's GameWorks sits on top of DirectX.

Yes. I'm not particularly hopeful. If any of the Steambox stuff gets anywhere that is all OpenGL.
