I've never gone with AMD for anything in the past. I'd like to know if they're recommended for anything. Their "Kaveri" processor is looking pretty nice. I know fatman wasn't happy with AMD for graphics cards. What have you guys experienced?

Not really. They're an entire process node behind the Intel. Intel will be at 14nm soon. My telephone is manufactured on the same process node as AMD's new stuff. That says it all.

As I understand it the only time it's even debatable is if you have very heavily multithreaded workloads. If you're playing games you don't.

What makes their graphics cards inferior to NVIDIA's?

Can you be specific? Somebody is trying to hook me on AMD technology but I've always used NVIDIA and the opinion from one of my most reputable sources was that NVIDIA is best. I'd like to give him specific examples of why AMD GPUs are problematic. On paper, they sound as though they're good cards but I can't exactly compare specs between manufacturers.

The drivers never work properly. That's their problem.

It always seems like a perpetual beta.

The guy who's trying to get me buying AMD is mad at NVIDIA for removing a feature on their hardware because Windows couldn't support it. Linux could, but this feature was removed because Windows couldn't. He says that AMD never did anything like that. I can't remember more details. Is NVIDIA more crooked than AMD business-wise?

AMD cards are also louder, run hotter, and I think have more power draw. Raw performance may be technically clocked higher but actual performance will likely be inferior to competitive nVidia cards due to software issues.

What do you guys think of Mantle? John Carmack doesn't seem to think that it's a big deal:
