Playing through Alien Swarm the other night I remembered that there's this really nice level set in a residential part of the game, what makes it so nice is that even though its pretty A to B stuff, the objective you have to do before getting to B is spread across a pretty wide level that has a pretty decent variety in its design, and due to the way its designed it really enforces good team work and planning and getting through it feels super satisfying on the harder difficulties where you take like an 8th of your health from a single hit.

This thread is great let's revive it.

I don't really know if all of these count as "levels" but here are some of my favorites.

Fallout - The Glow

Fallout 2 (Restoration Project) - EPA

Fallout 2 - Vault City + Gecko

Fallout New Vegas - Vault 11

SWKOTOR - Manaan (I need to play kotor2 imho)

Halo: Combat Evolved - The Maw

Halo: Combat Evolved - The Silent Cartographer

Halo 2 - Gravemind

Halo 2 - Uprising

Mass Effect - Virmire

System Shock 2 - Med/Sci

System Shock 2 - Engineering

Call Of Duty 4 - All Ghillied Up

I am sure I forgot some and some of these are probably really controversial.

I tried to leave out all the ones that have been mentioned too many times.

Following an NPC as he tells you exactly what to do at all times is what shooters need to be avoiding.

Leafy Lake in RollerCoaster Tycoon
Frontline and the Nazi Station in Metro 2033
Swamp in Metro: Last Light
Slaughterhouse (or something) in Dishonored: The Knife of Dunwall
Secret weapons facility in Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Infested corridors (basically the final third of the game) in Penumbra: Black Plague
Final boss and accelerator in Vessel
Land surrounding Outpost Tau (northwest chunk of the island) in Miasmata

It was fairly cool for its time. Back when shooters weren't so scripted.

Was that the part where those annoying electricity enemies featured? I didn't like that part too much, though I did enjoy the game very much. I can't remember what may favourite level was.

I dunno if this counts, but the Marsh House in TWD.
Also, Korriban was the highlight world in both KotORs, for different reasons.

Also the Konstantin Brayko boss fight in Alpha Protocol was pretty wizard.

SWF does have some of the electricity enemies, but I didn't find them all that annoying. There were only a few electric guys there.

I was wrong, though. The Secret Weapons Facility is only one map when I meant to reference a whole mission of the game (which contained that map). It's actually called Mission 4: Deadly Designs, and I think it has absolutely wonderful level design. My favorite part was actually outside the SWF at a bombed factory, which had a pretty open, nonlinear environment amidst a bunch of destroyed buildings and had the objective to just gather things. It's a fantastic map.

I just thought it was a fucking cool mission. Having McMillan by your side took nothing away from the experience. Gameplay-wise it could have been a lot better but damn did they perfect the mood and the environment.

That bombed factory was indeed a fantastic level, probably my favourite too.

I can't really think of anymore great levels that I didn't already mention. Life of the Party from Thief 2 and the first level of Timesplitters 2 are my all time favourites. I already mentioned them though.

The second last level of Mark of the Ninja is another great level. If I had to mention one from Dishonored I'd say the second level of Knife of Dunwall is the best.

The house where you basically do nothing just talk to people and mope around?

I would say the best level of TWD from a gameplay perspective at least has to be the sewers. It's one of the few times where you were in any legitimate danger of dying.
