Not a surprise, tbh. BB clearly changed its entire course midway through the second season. They changed a lot in order to gain popularity. BB wasn't popular at all at first.

I don't think I believe your theory that they made the show a crowd pleaser after the fact. I think it had the same arc in mind to begin with. Gilligan has said that right from the beginning they wanted to make him Scarface. they might have accelerated Walt's development; I don't think the scene where he throws fulminated mercury with Tuco belongs in the first season.

That was the highlight of the first season for me. It was probably implausible though.

True, but this is a really good show! It's more slow paced than BB and it's just awesome. I never thought Saul (feels weird to call him that now) had so much depth. I was scared it either wouldn't be an interesting character or that the character wouldn't really feel like Saul from BB, but tbh it just worked great.

I don't think the first third of the entire show belong in the show (or that the last 2 thirds of the show belong in it, depending on how you look at it). They changed the show very, very dramatically (and I'm not saying that him breaking bad is that dramatic change, that's just the plot and the title of the show, it's the entire tone of the show that changed), which was definitely intentional and I personally believe they did it because of ratings. I also believe that Lydia was a character specifically written for people complaining about women in the show only being housewives and/or girlfriends. She felt very forced and her significance in the finale was very awkward, imo. Same goes for Saul. People loved him, so they wrote more Saul jokes. He made the show very zaney (I know I said it a million times by now, but it has a place in this discussion). Hell, even Jesse was supposed to die in S1, but they decided against it because he acted well. The show was quite obviously written as they moved along (as opposed to, say, The Wire, which clearly had the entire story arcs for more than just one character from the very start), which is noticeable here and there. They wanted Walt to break bad, everything else was decided spontaneously. Still a very very good show, but not the masterpiece everyone is so crazy about, imo.

^yeah, this. still not sold on the fact that Saul can carry a multi-season show. I would've watched it as a miniseries, but I'm not that much of a fan to listen to 3 seasons of his dialogue, imo. so yeah, i'll wait some more
