Perhaps I'm being optimistic, but I feel like that article mischaracterizes the British people.

"We then collectively recoil in hurt outrage when the Indians point out that their share of the global economy slipped from 23% to a mere 4% under British rule. We’re similarly insulted when the Chinese bring up Britain’s century of state-sponsored, military-backed drug pushing."

I doubt either of those reactions are representative of the average Brit, though I have only my self selective anecdotal sphere to go off of.

I don't live in the UK, so I can only tell from the outside (that outside being Germany). I do have the feeling that this is a reality for many, albeit not all Brits, imho. Sometimes it feels like (some) Brits think that their position in WW2 makes everything that came before okay, when even the motives for joining that war weren't that heroic and/or altruistic in the first place. Some Churchill quotes from that era really make my flesh crawl. WW2 is really helpful for the way they perceive themselves, it seems. It's a very big part of their (pop) culture, now. They're (I really dislike referring to the Brits as "they", it sounds very condescending, which is not the intent) sort of American, that way, thinking they had and have the moral highground, whereas, imo at least, they don't, considering their own violent history. I don't think (might be misinformed, there) that they had their big moment of remorse within their society where they thoroughly dealt with their "sins". They certainly didn't until Thatcher, considering how they carried themselves in the 80s. Of course: Not true for all Brits, but some, especially the loud and outspoken ones. The comments sort of speak form themselves:

I think we have to accept that European imperialism was very much part of the development of this planet, like it or not.
That's not an attempt at whitewash. The legacy of colonialism has many negative aspects, but it shaped the nations in Asia and Africa that we see today - for better or worse.

No ****, Einstein. You can literally make the same case for the Third Reich. Really, really narrow way of looking at it.
