The Hobbit is a fine book, but Lord of the Rings is a tiresome work. Tens of pages of someone walking is not a good work. When Lord of the Rings is presumably the key work, I'm not a large fan of Tolkien.

I don't tend to read a lot of fiction.

Tacitus is excellent. I enjoy history with a moral subtext injected into it. Unfortunately that's a particularly bad period of history and it's easy to be left somewhat unhappy after reading it.

T.H. White's "The Once and Future King"
Richard Adam's "Watership Down"
Margaret Atwood's "Oryx and Crake"
Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman"

The classics, of course: "Ender's Game" and "Dune" are high up there. An underrated masterpiece is to be found in Daniel Handler's (aka Lemony Snicket's) "The End".

@theadder

I consider The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to be the lowest point of Tolkien's work as far as Arda goes.
I found the bigger picture with Morgoth and the rest of Ainur much more interesting than LOTR. The change in scales just left the said books feeling so insignificant.

Just finished House of god by Samuel Shem. It's good. Especially if you're interested in studying medicine.

I'm curious, anyone here read Scott Lynch's 'the Lies of Locke Lamora'? Fantasy, really cool and freakin hilarious, but also dark at times. I definitely recommend it.

I really like Neil Gaiman, but thought American Gods was terrible, at least I really didn't like it.

Indeed. You can skip hundreds of pages (literally, I actually did) and you won't miss anything important. Loooooooonnnnngggg and dull.
