Walking Dead was good but a bit too over the top with the violence for my tastes. I think once the gov. was gone it wasn't as bad but I kind of drifted away from those anyway.

I already know the Akira story, and I'm not sure why but I don't think I like it. Isn't there a film?

There is a film, though I didn't really like it, I had no idea what was going on.

I just read watchmen.

I liked the story within a story thing (the pirates). I really liked the idea of a "realistic" superhero story. Overall, it was pretty cool, but for me it didn't live up to the massive hype.

I think the reason I was left slightly disappointed was that it had the framework for an amazing story, but just wasn't fleshed out enough. I think this is probably the biggest limitation of graphic novels, and why I don't like them as much as regular books. So much energy goes into the artwork and arrangement that you don't get as full a story as you might if you just set it all down in words.

I'm sure people will argue that the story is told partially with the pictures, but that just doesn't do it for me.

edit: also what the hell is with that weird vagina-looking (fake) space monster?

Read some manga. That's where the real stories are at.

I often find myself just reading the text of a graphic novel, when that really isn't how it should be read. The fact is that they're graphic novels, a visual as well as text based medium. It's just hard to accustom myself to looking as well as reading something that comes in the format of a book; it's not something I'm used to, but something of value is definitely lost when you ignore the imagery.

I thought the stretch of an ending of Watchmen was probably the weakest part.
