It is defensive because you interpreted the stand up/comedy/expression of opinion or whatever as an attempted brain washing or something. "now they wanna tell me what I should think!!" suggests offense, that's why I wrote the question. Of course they're all self-important, it's show business. We wouldn't have a whole bunch of great art if it weren't for loud classmates who somehow find a way to express themselves eventually via art. That was an odd argument/joke from you, imho. I'm just saying this because you asked, not trying to start an argument about this !!! I guess I didn't appreciate the joke or something

I too am not really a fan of the format (although I watch a whole bunch of it at times), but it can be very good with the right guest and host. A great musical guest can really lift up the show as well. It's supposed to be the easy listening version of television and in that respect it works quite well.

Imo, John Oliver's show is nice though. I really hate the bits where he acts, but otherwise it's fun and sometimes clever. I disliked the Daily Show a lot, though. It was apparent that the "daily" format forced them to write quickly. Similar to a daily newspaper (as opposed to weekly newspapers), the perspective is just too limited and small, imho.
