I don't know what to think about that Snowden interview. You can see how painful it is for him to have to dumb the conversation down for the average Joe. They obviously cut this quite seriously. Snowden quite obviously doesn't want to joke around, but wants to talk about it. That's why the interview fails, imo. It forces the penis joke into every single serious bit so both the humour and the serious talk are distracted and obscured. I know that the point of the penis thing is to talk about a topic murica cares about, but it gets old fairly quickly. Really not his best work and quite awkward to watch, imho. I was still very very surprised they got Snowden to talk to them

I didn't think it was great either. We haven't seen other episodes yet, but the whole episode seemed as if it could do with being trimmed down a bit for length. 45 minutes seems to be too much for him.

Snowden looked like he was going to cry early on.

I felt sorry for him (Snowden) while watching this.

I did think the opening bit before he turned up was funny to watch, because I think Oliver was irl nervous.

This is a good bit, but I still think all of his content would be better without the over-the-top analogies he tends to act out. Also, the monkey was annoying. He completely ruined his message by sending the monkey in after the video with the crying girl.

Imo, this entire show would be so much better if there was a bit more satire and far less parody in it.

I like John Oliver, but sometimes he just pisses me off.
Like in this clip for example...

He could have dedicated that time to talk about how Greece is getting screwed over by the EU, and how absurd the whole ordeal is. But nope – he decided to talk about how funny the finance minister dresses.

We've seen some of this. I wish he was a bit better. Maybe someone will prod him in that direction.

It seems to be some sort of style of the show thing that holds him back.

Yes. I really think he could be much better. It's not really him, it's what the producers want the show to be. It should just be satire, no parody. I cringe every time he starts acting out those weird, forced punchlines. I think HBO customers are sophisticated enough to do without these things.
