Just to get it out of the way, the Macbook or Macbook Pro is the best option if you can afford it.

If you have a vendetta against Apple, the XPS 13 is the next best thing.

If you're cheap, you can by any sort of thin and light laptop (make sure it has an intel i5-U processor for the sake of decent speed and battery life), used or refurbished, that's a year or so old for about 400-500 USD. Non Macbook's don't hold their value in resale. If it doesn't have an SSD, by a 256 gb SSD for about $100 and it'll change your world. Do not ignore this last bit.

If you're truly cheap, a chromebook is a good option
It'll do everything you need umless you're an art or film student, and most of it nice and easily. If you do computer science or some kind of engineering, you might have to do some hacking to run a full unix terminal and install linux apps (Crouton). You might also need a $100 SSD if you need local storage.

If you're willing to by it a year old and refurbished/used, $500 on eBay.

Don't step on this one!!!

It seems to me that the Asus Zenbook UX305 looks pretty damn good. It's much cheaper than the XPS 13 which is my main choice for now. The CPU is weaker, but I don't use laptops for any CPU or graphical intensive tasks (I run all my computations and play all my games on other computers).

EDIT: http://www.anandtech.com/show/9104/asus ... 5-review/7

I might go for it.

EDIT: Yup made up my mind for the Zenbook UX305. Now I need to find a UK website that ships to Italy... Don't want an Italian keyboard layout haha, it's such a lame layour for () [] and {} among other things, which are symbols that I use all the fucking time.

Nevermind, not taking the ASUS, it costs much more than it is worth in Europe... 900 euros compared to 700$ in the US! I can get the XPS 13 for 960 euros. So I'm taking the XPS 13. Ordering it tonight.

Well, my current laptop is an Asus and it's working perfectly. It's an Eee PC. I remember that when I bought it I had to wait for a new Kernel version that supported the graphic chipset though, but that definitely would not have been an issue with the Zenbook that I talked about above which has a very well supported graphic chipset.

I'm upgrading because the Eee PC is not suitable at all for the new needs that I have, I especially need a much larger screen resolution.
