Motorola recently has been fairly interesting. The Moto X subverts the more cores approach and focuses on an improved user experience.

Motorola tried to imply heavily that it has 8 cores.

But it doesn't actually, not in the traditional sense. It may be marketing it as a powerhouse but it's a lightweight phone. The additional cores actually lower power draw and aren't for regular processing. The Moto X has well over a day of battery life.

It doesn't have 8 cores in any but the most stupid of senses. Yes.

Days is a very odd way to measure battery life. I read an article about this at the time. It's a way to imply much more potential usage than is in fact true. There's a lot of sleep and other stuff in there. It seems better to measure potential usage and potential sleep separately and let the reader work it out. Otherwise everyone infers full usage for the time quoted.

It's generally reported that the Moto X in general usage conditions offers more battery life than most smartphones, and is at least on par with the 5S in that respect. The multiple cores are intended to minimize battery life despite the multitudinous standby features, though I'm not sure how useful the features are. They aren't extra SoC cores adding redundant additional processing power.

I might be remembering this wrong, but I think I read that the new Tegra chip has 5 cores but they're never all active.
