I'm not sure I agree with (or like) that nomenclature, then.

I don't think that the unprecise representation of singular laws of physics (or some phenomenon in nature) makes something immediately softer in terms of SciFi (or SciFi at all for that matter). Stuff explodes unnecessarily in every other movie, stupid stuff like that happens all the time for entertainment purposes. It doesn't make The Martian necessarily "softer", imho. However, The Martian's plot feels like something we could do in 10-20 years time if we were after it like we used to in the 60s. That's just not enough to tickle my SciFi nerve.

Maybe The Martian is "hard SciFi" per defenitionem, but it doesn't feel like SciFi to me. My feelings aren't objective truths, but they make me not be interested in The Martian much.

To me, The Martian feels like a scientifically "softer" regular drama survival story set on a space station on Mars, not a "hard" SciFi story. It depends on how you look at it. I saw that chart you linked, there, and while it makes sense from that perspective, it also makes me feel like lots of stories that aren't considered hard SciFi from anyone would actually fit into this category, e.g. all of James Bond would probably be medium - firm SciFi, which is weirdly close to Star Wars-ish soft SciFi. Bond isn't SciFi, it's just a bit stupid and/or doesn't care about some science. It's not that simple and that chart seems to reach out into territory that just doesn't belong to the genre (as far as I'm concerned at least).

If anything, it seems to fit into the "Robinsonade" type of fiction, set on Mars instead of an island.

Anyway, back to the studying, I prob won't or can't reply

I'm not using that chart as it is exactly, I'm not into classifying stuff into neat sharp categories, I was just linking to an example that gives a definition of what hard and soft mean in the context of SF. So I agree with your James Bond example. I don't know if I like that hardness scale myself or not, it's just that it exists, and that everyone uses it when speaking about SF, so it's worth knowing what hard and soft mean when speaking about SF since it's a slightly peculiar meaning.

So yes by definition The Martian is the archetype example of very hard SF. But yeah it's just a matter of definition, it doesn't mean anything else than that, and it definitely doesn't mean that anyone should or shouldn't like it, as you say it just might not tickle your SF nerve.

Without spoiling it, let just say that it's not really like a regular drama survival. The Martian is rather like engineering porn. =D

Don't watch the Escobar trailer, it spoils the entire film. I'd like to watch benicio del toro do pablo escobar

ffs trailer editors tone it down

Yeah it's such a painful trend. Now when I watch a trailer it's almost never to the end, if it grabs my interest then I stop, I know I'll watch the movie at that point so I don't need to know more.

I am very much looking forward to McQueen's HBO project.

[i]The project is still untitled and the exact details of the pilot are vague except that it will be, according to McQueen’s words, "an exploration of a young African American man’s experience entering New York high society, with a past that may not be what it seems."[/
