I have been playing for a bit now. My first zee captain was a complete failure. My second is scraping by.

It's very successful at evoking a specific feeling; it's lonely and inscrutable and foreboding and adventurous all at once, and none of it really fades over time. It takes a bit to process all of the mechanics and get into the groove of the game, but perhaps if you've played some roguelikes before it's less of an overwhelming experience.

Theres a wiki if you want to look at it but for me being a bit clueless and discovering things on my own and getting better is half the fun. The game does a very good job making you feel accomplished when you do something good like a good trade or whatever. I have played quite a few roguelikes but this still seems closer to ftl than anything else, except with more commerce and no pressure because youre escaping, insteand you explore and its v rewarding! I love all the little stories, the writing is very nice, and im a person who normally doesnt care too much about games stories. Overall its very immersive imo. Im getting better, Im on my fourth or fifth capitain and now understand the mechanics better, but theres still some stuff that I dont know how it works, which is intriguing, you learn to live in this world.
Imo not being afraid to die and lose all your gear etc is part of the fun, and how you should play any game with permadeath, you can play it safe sometimes, but sometimes I also get a bit adventurous, and the rush when I barely make it home alive and I hear the tolling bells of the london port, the feeling of relief and the excitement of being loaded with goods to sell or whatever, is fantastic!!! The feeling when a run ends and you realise you did significally better than the previous time is also very rewarding.

I played a couple of hours. It sucked me in. My first captain is still alive. I fucked up, though, so it might be over very soon imho.
