Ahah, I wasn't trying to annoy you, irl. I was just asking, because I would've been pissed if I saw all these levels and monsters in advance. Encountering all those deaths all by yourself is very much part of the fun. It's definitely a good video, I agree.

That's also why I tended to ignore the messages in Dark Souls altogether. It's like playing with a walkthrough and spoils the fun, imo. It makes it harder, yes, but wth.

I've seen most of the levels and monsters already. In fact, I'm at the part where the constant frenzy shit happens, now. I've actually had more of the locations and enemies previously spoiled for me in standard reviews anyway. I only got glimpses of them though. I don't really mind. Seeing some areas I haven't been to in videos, only makes me more anxious to get to them. There's one huge castle I've seen in other videos, that I haven't been to yet, but it looks awesome. I think the area is optional. I hope I don't miss it.

I don't agree with that about the messages at all. You would have no way of knowing certain things about the game, without reading the messages. They're mostly very vague hints anyway, and some are outright lies. Some are quite humourous. There's several that say "bonfire ahead". Bonfires in Bloodborne do nothing but burn you. Trying to distinguish the honest messages from the lies adds a bit of dynamism to the game itself. Dark Souls 2 over does it with the messages, but I think the Miyazaki games handle it just fine.

This was all planned by the Patriots long ago.

That was quite good. I think Far Cry 3 did a good job with its open world. Certainly by Ubisoft standards anyway.

I think his strongest point (that he sadly didn't focus on enough imho) is that open world games (and RPGs in particular) should abandon the regular 3-chapter structure from movies and novels. I agree that a nice sidequest storyline is usually the highlight in these types of enormous games, but he didn't really find or suggest a solution for the "main" storyline that's still present in all open world games.
imho, similar to ensemble films (that are often different to other films in terms of narrative structure), i'd like someone to try an open world ensemble game where you get to explore and experience the world from, say, 8 very different perspectives with individual stories that are loosely connected, similar to what the Song of Ice and Fire books are doing, maybe. all of the characters can have certain limitations within the gameworld because their role limits their mobility (e.g. farmer who is not supposed to leave a certain area and will be hunted down, royal who can't just go anywhere because it's too dangerous, etc.). I deliberately chose Song of Ice and Fire, here, not Game of Thrones, because one fundamental difference is that in the novels, you really get to experience the stories from many people's perspectives, whereas in Game of Thrones, the camera just moves into different locations where different people are. You can't (literally) read what they're thinking like you do in the book, which makes a big difference. So I'd like that hypothetical game to be more similar to the novels rather than the show.
I know that GTA 5 sort of kind of does that, but I haven't played it, yet, and the ensemble is a bit too small, imho. It's a step in the right direction, probably.
Pathologic has a very interesting approach, too, but you're forced to replay it in order to get that experience. I'd like everything to be in one playthrough.

I'd say the greatest advantage books have over pretty much all other media, is the way they can portray what people are thinking extensively, without being tedious or immersion breaking. I don't see how a game could adequately portray that kind of thing.

GTA 5's ensemble is tiny, but I do like the innovation. I don't think it has any real bearing on the outcome of the story, though. Progression is still very linear. It's my understanding, that the old GTA games handled their open worlds best. They were proper sandboxes, and weren't as driven by the story. Although I didn't play enough of them to know for certain.
