@ Bego,

Don't you consider Gothic at least as good as the Elder Scrolls when it comes to open world design?

I must say though: In terms of open world design and adventurism, no one comes even close to Bethesda.

Fallout's combat is broken. It's really really bad, starting with basic AI issues and the companions BS. It's even worse if you build a CHA character. There are no excuses for this, considering what the competition (Diablo, BG2) managed to accomplish. It's just terrible. I love Fallout 1 and 2, but it has some real problems.

I haven't played Borderlands 2, but the first game didn't evoke that feeling nearly as much.

alerommel, yes!!! I barely mention Gothic here anymore, since basically no one but you has even heard of it (or cares), but Piranha Bytes managed to accomplish something really special with Gothic 1 and 2 in terms of open world design. Imo it's not the adventurism, but the immersion. Gothic's open worlds feel so organic and natural. They made the best RPG open worlds to date, no doubt,
However, Bethesda does the best adventurist "oh look, there's a mountain, I wonder what's up there" type of adventurism. Gothic would tell you to GTFOuttathere by having Orks running around the area. Skyrim is far more forgiving, which makes the casual strolling around, saving the world one dungeon at a time more enjoyable. There is no doubt that Gothic is the superior open world game, though. I play them for completely different reasons, though.

I think Fallout New Vegas blows FO3 and FO4 away in terms of Open World design, but yes the world design of TES is pretty good. Especially Morrowind.

Not sure where else to post this. But what a great video.

On a different note, I listened through all the audio logs of SS2 last night. The writing is just incredible. The characters are so human and believable and the entire plot is incredibly interesting. I missed a lot of the nuances when I played the actual game, and listening to this really makes me agree with Fatman when he said that SS2 has one of the best and one of the best told stories in all of video game history. You could make a killer HBO show from the events occurring before the player character wakes up from cryostasis.

That was a very good video. I loved the choice of music throughout as well.

System Shock 2 has a great backstory, but I don't know if I'd say it has a great plot. People often confuse the two. This is why a game like Dark Souls is deemed to have the best story ever, by some of that game's fanbase. SS2 has a better story than that game, but I don't think I'd call it great overall.

The backstory is definitely part of the overall story imo. So much of the game's storytelling is referring to the backstory. It's all tied together in such a way that separating the two doesn't really make sense.

We are told about all the events that happened to the other characters, often through their own words. This is not the same as experiencing it directly. Maybe the backstory and main plot are more directly tied than I remember, but I certainly don't think this is an ideal method of handling storytelling, even if the writing is great. But I won't deny the writing itself, and the excellent voice acting, which accentuated the great lines, any merit. I have heard that Shodan was a better villain in the first game, and based in the audio I've heard from it, it could well be true.
