This is a great book. Everyone should read it and read something about the 1920s +, Fitzgerald himself and the symbolysm in The Great Gatsby afterwards. It's sublime.

I read this book in high school and hated it with the fire of a thousand suns. I can't even remember why now, but the hatred is seared into my brain to such an extent that I have a hard time tolerating anything to do with the 1920s, even if it's good.
(boardwalk empire, etc)

I appreciate where the guy was going, he just needed to spend less time on his soapbox and more time developing a proper narrative. My God, Fitzpatrick loved his soapbox.

Thinking about this book is making me irrationally angry.

Maybe if you read it again you will apreciate it? I was forced to read 1984 in school and I hated it, I have it another chance and now its one of my favourite books, ive read it like five times.

Academic reading of a book often seems to ruin it, unfortunately.

I've never been able to work out quite why that is. I suspect that too much detailed analysis spoils things.
