Well, you already have two for your desktop, don't you?

I have two (the one for the desktop and the one from the laptop) and I find it very handy. I usually watch PDFs or E-Books on the bigger desktop screen and type summaries of those PDFs on my laptop. iirc, you already have two monitors, so I don't really see how another monitor might make that much of a difference. You can already do what I do.

I do have two in principle, but I turned off the second display. It's very old now and it's probably burning electricity like you wouldn't believe. Power consumption tends to go up a lot with age; it gets really hot too and I started to get a bit concerned that it might catch fire.

The other thing is that it was quite an early and very cheap TFT. It's quite difficult to read text on it and it's at a different height from the main monitor. I decided to just give up and use the 24" only.

Both the iMac and the Thunderbolt Display [the screen connected to the laptops in the images] are 27". The additional laptop screen size would likely be 13".

The hope is that the iMac will have a 3840x2160 screen. The laptop would be 2560x1600.

I think the iMac + shitty laptop sounds like the best way to go.

This seems to be the consensus.

Any other views?

The Air is so nice with its nice battery life and it's form factor to carry around! I don't know if it irl suits your needs but it's a very nice laptop. I would do that but I'm not you, it's also not halal to use the laptop as a desktop instead of doing the real thing so in your circumstances I'd go for the iMac probably. I still want the air though.

It's halal to use the laptop as a desktop if you're not trying to play intensive games on it.

The Thunderbolt Display could be the solution. It's probably not for me, though. Bego is right, I think.
