Finally completed Doom, found every secret etc on Ultra Violence. Took about 20 hours. The initial hype kind of disappeared halfway through the game. At the beginning I was very happy to play it cause it felt fresh to have a decent single player FPS, I haven't played a new one in years. But then the more you play it the more the stupid design gets in the way and kills the fun. It still was decently fun all the way through, but it's not that good of a FPS after all.

I wanted to pick up Astroneer to play it in coop, but it turns out that multiplayer is very buggy so I'll wait that it gets out of Early Access.

I got Factorio, holy **** I need to go to sleep but I know what I'm doing this christmas. This gameplay trailer says it how it is, fairly accurate:

What "stupid design" does Doom have?

Personally the thing I disliked the most by far in the game is the character progression design. It's way too RPG-like. Even after finishing the game I can't believe they actually did this ****, I can't comprehend it. Is it beacuse there is some marketing stat that say that absolutely any game with RPG elements sell more? No idea. There is a reason for sure, but I hate the designer that gave the go-ahead on this.

I also think it's a problem with the game, but not a big one. At the very least, it does allow you customise the weapons into some really badass tools. I don't think the reasons for it, have any bearing on the quality of the game either. But I will say, that it's one of the few ways in which it's dissimilar to the original games, in a bad way.

I liked the weapon upgrade system in the game, but the suit upgrades felt completely pointless and it honestly just shouldn't have been there to begin with. It added nothing to the game at all and just felt... weird. Also the "Relic" things or whatever they were called. The things you get for completing the trial things.

didn't really change my opinion of the game that much, but i just don't feel like they fit in at all.

I just didn't expect to have to open menus and think about what upgrades I would want to unlock in what order. Not in this kind of game. It slowed the pacing down enough that it exhausted my patience. I just wanted a game where you go on and shoot, and sure why not where you can find new weapons or some upgrades on the ground, without having to browse a menu to do anything. Even the Metroid Prime games, which are full or upgrades, do this way better, you just pick the upgrades up as you find them and go on. Doom is more convoluted and RPG like than fucking Metroid! It really bothered me, but it's one of my worst pet peeves, when action games try to be RPGs, so I rant a lot about this when I encounter it.

I'm starting to figure out Factorio a bit, so I'll try to explain what I like about it. It's a game about automation, you start from scratch and the goal is to make a rocket and leave the planet on which you're stranded.

You have to do everything manually at first, but soon you gather enough materials to make a variety of machines that help you. It snowballs very quickly and you end up at a very high level of management of a huge factory that builds things for you.

The factories need to be quite efficient or it will take ages to get to the rocket (there is an achievement for doing it under 8 hours, which seems very difficult to my beginner eyes). So you spend a lot of time doing optimization. You deal with a lot of different elements: resource management, energy, pollution, logistics, technology/science research, logic circuits, space management, defense (and offense!) against hostile aliens, ...

It reminded me of an xkcd that is very relevant: https://xkcd.com/1319/ That's precisely what happens when you play Factorio, and it's the core of what makes it fun. There's an achievement to finish the game (make the rocket) while only ever crafting 111 things manually, I think it symbolizes the spirit of the game.

And it's quite fun in coop. I'm playing it with my brother.

I'm playing The Witness, I got it in the Humble Freedom Bundle. I really love it. Maybe the main puzzles are a little bit too easy, but I think it's fine because I've already glimpsed a lot of side puzzles that I'll come back to later that seem more challenging. I'm pretty much at the end of the main puzzles and it was really fun.

The game surprised me. From some screenshots that I've seen before playing it, I expected it to be a glorified mobile puzzle game with the bonus of a nice environment to walk through to reach the next mobile puzzle game. But it's actually a lot more than that. The large scale and the environments are essential.

So really enjoying it and I guess I'll try to go for a 100% completion.

99% completion on The Witness, only 4 things left to do.

It's the most impressive level design I've ever seen. Most cohesive certainly.
