So I am about to buy a notebook for my studies and I've just noticed that I can get the notebook of my liking with either Windows 7 or 8, the price is the same in this particular case.

I am not particularly fond of that Metro UI and the fact that there are always two UIs running, but maybe I am unaware of Windows 8's advantages, so I will ask quite simply:

What would you recommend? Windows 7 or 8?

Go with windows 7. I have windows 8 right now, and it's a bit faster than 7, but like, eh. I like it and all, but there are no big outstanding differences that make it worth it. It's pretty much windows 7 with an additional thing instead of the start menu and a slight boost in speed. Oh, and valve said steam won't be supporting windows 8 anytime in the near future.

If Windows 8 any faster, which it isn't, it's because they turned off Aero. Users can already turn this off in Windows 7.

Microsoft isn't in the business of faster. It's in the business of slower or the same.

Microsoft's structure doesn't allow for faster.

Microsoft isn't in the business of the same, it's in the business of slightly more annoying than last time.

I've read in numerous reviews that 8 is indeed faster, starting Windows up in particular.

I will go for 7, then. Any important stuff I need to do once I have it? Should I turn this Aero thing off?

Ah. That must be the update that's happening in a day or two (Windows 8 warns you two days in advance before they restart your computer for an update. There's no way to cancel it like before, which is probably a good thing since I never updated windows 7 unless I actually needed to restart my computer). Personally, I'm fine without the start menu. I've gotten used to it.
